Ari Aster Turned Down Offer To Direct 'Morbius'
Director Ari Aster is known for making his very own unique movies including Hereditary , Midsommar , and the upcoming film Eddington . However, it looks like he once had the opportunity to add a very different kind of movie to his resume. Specifically, Ari Aster reveals that he was offered the chance to direct Sony's Marvel adaptation Morbius . The final version of Morbius that hit theaters, as we all know, became a box office flop. It was one of several failures in Sony's efforts to adapt Spider-Man characters with their own major Marvel franchises, and Jared Leto's portrayal of the titular character became the subject of many memes. This obviously makes one wonder what would've happened if someone like Aster was involved with the project instead of director Daniel Espinosa. Here's what Aster shared via Semafor: 'I was asked to do 'Mobius.' Or is it 'Morbius'? Oh, God,' he said. 'We could have added it to my list of [flops].' It's definitely an interesting layer to unearth regarding the development of Morbius . As mentioned, Daniel Espinosa ultimately directed the film, which failed to resonate with fans of the character and the rest of the Spider-Man franchise. Other Sony films shared similar fates, and their attempt at a universe of Spider-Man villains was finally axed. While having Ari Aster as the director would have certainly provided a much different kind of Morbius movie, it's likely that it still would have underperformed based on what Sony was doing. One must also consider that Aster's movies don't really fit the formula for comic book adaptations, so it could have alienated audiences for that reason as well. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the future endeavors of Ari Aster as we have them. It's unlikely that we'll see him taking any other offers to direct a superhero movie in the future, but stranger things have certainly happened. In the meantime, fans can look forward to his new movie Eddington that looks like another film with Aster's signature style.

HBO Max Cancels Series After One Season
Sadly, HBO Max has made the decision to cancel one of their series after releasing only one season on their platform. The series finale was released not even a full week before the announcement was released. The network obviously didn't want to keep fans hanging for more. This news may be disappointing for viewers who tuned into the series since it first started airing in May. Now, after a mere two months following its initial release on HBO Max, the series has come to a complete end without any possibility of a continuation. For such a quick cancellation, it can be disappointing to remember how long it took the show to get off the ground in the first place. The show's development can be traced back to 2020 before it was finally ordered in 2023. The series was part of a deal between J.J. Abram's Bad Robot label and Warner Bros. going back to 2019, and in 2025, the series remains the only series to have come to fruition out of their contract. As shared via Variety: 'The 1970s crime series ' Duster ' has been canceled at HBO Max after just one season.' The outlet included the following statement from HBO Max regarding the cancellation: 'While HBO Max will not be moving forward with a second season of ' Duster ,' we are so grateful to have had the chance to work with the amazingly talented co-creators J.J. Abrams and LaToya Morgan, and our partners at Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Television,' the streamer shared. 'We are tremendously proud of this series led by Josh Holloway and Rachel Hilson and we thank them along with our cast and crew for their incredible collaboration and partnership.' WBTV thanked J.J. Abrams and LaToya Morgan in addition to the cast and crew of the series for their work on Duster: 'J.J. Abrams and LaToya Morgan delivered a thrilling, multi-dimensional crime drama in ' Duster ,' with textured characters that took the audience back to the 1970s in a new and innovative way,' WBTV added. 'Those characters were brought to life by a wonderful team led by Josh, Rachel, and an extremely talented ensemble cast, along with an expert crew behind the scenes. We are incredibly proud of the show, and while we wish this journey could continue, we are thankful to our partners at HBO Max for the opportunity to tell Jim and Nina's story.' It's an unfortunate result of the competitive nature of streaming and how platforms curate content. While Duster won't be returning for another season, at least it was able to finally make it to the screen at all. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for more news regarding the latest cancellations and renewals in the world of streaming and television.

New 'Resident Evil' Movie Director Will Respect The Lore While Taking Creative Liberties
The Resident Evil film franchise has taken some unique directions over the years while loosely adapting the iconic video game series of the same name. While some of these adaptations are closer to the games than others, Barbarian and Weapons director Zach Cregger has been tapped to do his own take that will respect the lore while also taking creative liberties. Cregger revealed his plans for the new reboot while speaking with SFX Magazine. He first emphasized that he's a big fan of the video games, and that he's 'played them all,' while Resident Evil 4 is one title in particular that he's 'just looped again and again.' 'I am a gigantic Resident Evil game fan. I've played them all. I don't know how many times I've just looped [RE4] again and again. I just love it,' he began. 'I'm definitely not trying to be completely obedient to the lore of the games; I'm trying to tell a story that just feels authentic to the experience you get when you play the games.' He also acknowledged that he might receive backlash for his creative decisions, but ultimately, he hopes to create 'a really good movie.' As such, he hopes that fans will be proud of it in the same way that he will be. 'I don't think I'm breaking any major rules,' Cregger said, 'but I also recognize that no matter what I do, people are going to come for me online. So all I want to do is make a really good movie and tell a story that's compelling. I know I'm going to be proud of it, and hopefully others will be too.' With the divisiveness of Resident Evil movie adaptations, the Weapons director will have to work hard to make sure fans are satisfied, especially if he's planning his own creative liberties. If he manages to respect the franchise's style and lore, however, then perhaps fans will be willing to accept some changes. Resident Evil is scheduled to hit theaters on September 18, 2026. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the highly-anticipated adaptation as we have them. Hopefully the new film will still satisfy fans of the franchise, even if it's not a completely 'obedient' adaptation of the games.

Paranormal Investigator Dan Rivera Dies During Annabelle Haunted Doll Tour
The allegedly haunted doll known as 'Annabelle,' that horror fans may recognize from The Conjuring and its follow-ups, was the focus of a ' Devils on the Run Tour ' when the paranormal investigator hosting the tour suddenly died. Dan Rivera, who was only 54-years-old, passed away unexpectedly during the tour. As reported by the NY Post, the US Army Veteran was hosting the tour in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania at the time of his death. Firefighters and medics were dispatched to his hotel, and while CPR was performed on Rivera, attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. Dan Rivera is said to have been the lead investigator for the New England Society for Psychic Research. Additionally, the exact cause of his unexpected death has yet to be confirmed. Fans may have recognized Rivera for being involved with the Travel Channel's Most Haunted Place as a paranormal investigator. He was also a producer for other similar shows including the Netflix series 28 Days Haunted . The New England Society for Psychic Research, aka NESPR, reported that Rivera was one of several members from the organization giving tours surrounding the doll known as Annabelle. The outlet adds that Rivera's 'death came after he finished a three-day sellout stop in Gettysburg from Friday through Sunday.' The tour was hosted by the ' Ghostly Images of Gettysburg Tours ' at the Soldiers National Orphanage. Prior to its popularity in The Conjuring , which featured a fictionalized version of the doll, Annabelle was a Raggedy Ann doll investigated by Ed and Lorraine Warren in the 1970s. In fact, the Warrens founded the NESPR organization as far back as 1952. The doll was eventually placed in the Warrens' occult museum, and it has since been under the ownership of their daughter Judy and son-in-law, Tony Spera, who have toured the doll with their museum in recent years. Dan Rivera is survived by his wife Sarah and four children. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any potential updates regarding the situation as we have them.
